I have been very fortunate to represent the National League of Cities on several international trips. No city funds are used for any international trips. I am always available to speak to civic groups, schools and others about these trips. Learning and sharing have been a part of my life since I was in high school. I am proud to have spoken to hundreds of groups and provided a glimpse of the world that might otherwise not be available to our youth and citizens.
Marrakech, Morocco
In 2006, I represented the National League of Cities in Marrakech, Morocco to take part in the United Cities and Local Authorities (UCLG). Morocco is one of the most exotic places that I have ever visited. The snake charmers and monkey handlers made the visit interesting and exciting. Take a look at these pictures. It was great.
PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF CHINA
In 2002, I was honored to be selected to be one of seven public officials from throughout the United States to travel to the Peoples Republic of China. This trip was one of the highlights of my life. I met some wonderful people and got to see some of the most amazing sights in the world. Standing on the Great Wall is an experience that I will never forget.
Our hosts in China were warm and friendly. As I have learned in my many trips abroad, the world is smaller and more similar than we are led to believe. A child in China feels the same joy and pain that a child in our hometown feels. These are just a few of the hundreds of pictures that I took in China.

CONNECTING COMMUNITIES CONFERENCE IN CAUX, SWITZERLAND
Pastor Kates and I were invited to present a program at the Connecting Communities Conference in Caux, Switzerland in July, 2002. We traveled to Geneva by air and then took the train to Montruex. We headed into the Alps to one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen. We joined 350 other participants from over 50 different countries. We also were able to take the bullet train from Geneva to Paris. It was an exciting trip and we made a lot of new friends.

SELMA, ALABAMA
It was my pleasure to represent the National League of Cities at the Group Work Camp Foundation Project in Selma, Alabama on June 9, 2003. I was able to visit one of the historic cities in the Civil Rights Struggle and meet with some very dedicated people who are working to make their community better. I walked over the Edmund Pettus Bridge which was the scene of the confrontation between the Alabama State Police and Civil Rights marchers, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I also visited the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute. It gave an interesting history of the struggle for voting rights in the United States. I also attended a meeting of the Selma City Council and met the Mayor and members of council.

MILLENIUM MAYORTHON IN TEXAS, OKLAHOMA AND MISSOURI
From May 21-31, 2000, I had the opportunity to be a part of a nationwide event to encourage families to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation. I joined the Millennium Mayorthon in Gainesville, Texas and traveled through Oklahoma and Missouri. We met dozens of transplant recipients, including dozens of children who owed their lives to the generousity of strangers. The highlight of the trip was a visit to the Oklahoma Memorial in Oklahoma City. I was proud to have organized an event in Clarksburg that raised over $2000 for the construction of the Oklahoma City Memorial.
