Jim Hunt, President National League of Cities

JIM HUNT COMPLETES TERM AS PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES

Clarksburg City Councilman Jim Hunt completed his term as President of the National League of Cities in Reno, Nevada at the 83nd Congress of Cities Conference.  Hunt was the first West Virginian ever elected as an officer. 

Councilman Jim Hunt is a six term councilman and former Mayor of Clarksburg, West Virginia and has been active in the National League of Cities for over fifteen years.  Hunt has served as Vice-Chairperson and Chairperson of both the Leadership Training Council and the Advisory Council and served on the Board of Directors from 1993-95.  In 2002, he was selected to participate in a study tour of the Peoples Republic of China sponsored by the United States State Department.

Hunt is a national leader in the National League of Cities “Undoing Racism” campaign started by former NLC President, Mayor Bob Knight of Wichita, Kansas.  He was a panelist at the first National Undoing Racism Conference in Frisco, Texas in 2000 and was featured in an NLC film used nationwide for the Undoing Racism program.  Hunt has been an invited speaker on racism at Municipal League conferences in Idaho, California and Mississippi and is currently working on a project in Selma, Alabama to develop a community plan to address the effects of racism and poverty with Mayor James Perkins, Jr., the first African-American Mayor of Selma.

Hunt commented, “It is indeed an honor to represent my city and state on a national level to assist the 18,000 cities, towns and villages in the National League of Cities towards a better future.”

The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest organization representing municipal governments throughout the United States.  Its mission is to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance.

Professionally, Hunt is employed as Manager of the Clarksburg Office of the West Virginia Housing Development Fund and also serves as director of the Statewide Demolition Program which removes vacant and dilapidated buildings from throughout West Virginia.
